Select a chunking method

A chunking method determines how a source document is divided into retrievable chunks. Use only the methods shown for the current environment and file type.

Choose the default method

When creating or editing Documents (Lite), select Default Chunking Method. This setting supplies the starting method for documents added to the resource.

Change one document

  1. Open the Documents (Lite) resource.
  2. On a document that is not currently parsing or canceling, select Settings.
  3. Review the current method and file name.
  4. Select a new chunking method.
  5. Complete any fields shown for that method, such as chunk size or method-specific advanced fields.
  6. Read the re-chunking warning and select Save only if you accept it.

Destructive effect of re-chunking

Changing a document's method starts a new parse. Existing generated chunks—including manual chunk edits—are overwritten, and retrieval from that document is unavailable while processing runs.

Selection guidance

  • Choose based on source structure, not only file extension.
  • Review the method description shown in the selector.
  • Test retrieval with representative questions after processing completes.
  • Do not claim one method is universally best without comparative evidence from your own content.
